Gynecomastia or man boobs are excessive fatty or breast tissue in men which can be due to drug or medication use, hormonal, genetic, or from weight gain. A thorough work up is performed and this includes a history and physical exam, laboratory tests, and xray studies. Once the work up is complete, the surgery to remove the excess tissue is performed by using a combination of liposuction to remove the fatty tissue and a small incision under the nipple to remove the firm breast tissue under the nipple.
The procedure takes about 2 hours and is outpatient surgery. The patient is asleep during the procedure and goes home after the surgery. A compression vest is worn for 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure. Normal activity can be resumed after 2 weeks. The procedure is minimally painful and the bruising will resolve after 2 weeks. The sutures dissolve by themselves. The goal is to decrease the volume of fatty and breast tissue.
