Fat Injections (Graft)

Introduction

Fat grafting is performed by harvesting a person's own fat and injecting in areas to improve the contour, eliminate wrinkles, and add fullness. Fat graft can replace collagen or other soft tissue fillers. The advantages are:

• Fat is not artificial and is transferred from one area to another.
• No skin testing is needed.
• No allergic or foreign body reaction.

Indication

Fat can be injected at the following areas not only to improve the facial contour, but also in the other areas of the body to diminish any deformities or defects:

• Add fullness to upper lips, cheeks, hands.
• Eliminate wrinkles in the lips, nasolabial folds, glabellar region.
• Improve contour by diminishing the scars or deformities of the face and other areas of the body.

Technique

Fat injection is an outpatient procedure which is performed either in the office or in the hospital in conjunction with other procedures. The area of fat removal (buttocks or abdomen) is anesthesized and the fat is taken with a needle and syringe. The fat is then injected with a special cannula to the affected area till the desired result is achieved.

Following the procedure

There is some swelling after the procedure and this resolves over time. The patients may have minimal discomfort. Patients may return to normal activity after the procedure.
