Chemical Peel

Introduction

Chemical peel is a form of skin resurfacing with the goal to eliminate fine wrinkles. This is performed by reorienting the collagen to yield a firmer, tighter skin, without the wrinkles. Chemical Peels come in many formulations including phenol, TCA, etc. The goal of a peel is similar to laser resurfacing and thus can be performed in conjunction with other procedures.

Indication

Any patient with fine wrinkles and skin types I to III, and does not have healing problems is a candidate for skin resurfacing with a chemical peel.

A peel can be performed with different concentrations for different regions of the face. Other indications include sun damage, superficial lesions, dyschromias.

Technique

A deep peel is performed in the operating room under sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure takes about one hour. The patient's face is cleansed, the peel performed to the desired areas, followed by a dressing which consists of lotion.

Following the Procedure

The patient returns home the same day. Pain is moderate and controlled with pain medications. The dressings consist of ointment applied to the face two to three times a day after washing the face with warm water. The facial swelling resolves over one week and the healing occurs over the next two weeks. The patient will be able to return to social activities in two to three weeks. The redness resolves over several months and often is camouflaged by cosmetics which can be worn after ten days. The cosmetics should be free of harsh chemicals. The patient will note a remarkable result over the next few months with tighter, wrinkle free skin, younger appearing skin.
