Breast Reduction

Introduction

Breast reduction, also called reduction mammaplasty, removes excess breast tissue and skin, making the breast proportional to the rest of your body. The areola (dark skin around the nipple) is reduced in size also. While the goals of this surgery are weight and volume reduction, aesthetic enhancement remains very important also.

Indications

Patients desiring to reduce the size of breasts for both physical and psychological reasons are excellent candidates for this procedure.

Patients with the following symptoms may benefit from breast reduction:

  • Back, neck, or shoulder pain due to the large breast size
  • Skin irritation under the breasts
  • Shoulder grooving due to tight breast straps
  • Breasts that are proportionally larger the body frame
  • Difficulty at work or exercising due to the size of the breasts
  • Asymmetrical breast size
  • Self consciousness about large breast size

Specific topics discussed during consultation:

  • Possibility of breast feeding
  • Present and desired breast size, including any nipple or breast asymmetry, if present
  • Incision locations
  • Last Mammogram / previous breast surgery / family history of breast cancer
  • Measurements and pictures
  • Possibility of Insurance coverage

Technique

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes four to five hours. Markings for skin incision and new nipple site are done in the pre-operative area. Following incisions, the breast tissue with skin is excised with the goal to maintain symmetry, nipple viability, and cosmesis.

An ace wrap dressing is placed following skin closure.

Following the procedure

Most patients return home the day of the procedure. Pain is usually minimal and easily relieved with pain medications. There is rapid improvement in neck and back pain. The surgical dressing is maintained for 2 days following which the dressing is removed, the incisions examined, and a support bra is used. Over the next few weeks, the bruising and the swelling gradually resolve, nipple sensation improves, and patient may return to normal activities and mild exercise. The incisions fade with time.
