Breast Lift
Introduction
Breast lift, mastopexy, is performed to correct for sagging breasts. Pregnancy, aging, effects of gravity cause the skin to stretch and this causes the areola to enlarge and breasts to droop. Breast lift reduces the size of the areola and raises the breast tissue and the nipple by means of skin excision.
Indications
Women who are happy with the size of their breasts but want a lift are excellent candidates. Breast lift should be performed when no future pregnancies are planned since pregnancy can cause the breasts to sag following the procedure. Women who desire a reduction in the breast volume or have symptoms such as back and neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps would instead benefit from breast reduction.
This procedure can also be performed following the removal of an implant when the implant is not replaced or can be combined to correct for sagging at the time of placement of an implant.
Technique
The procedure can be performed under sedation or general anesthesia (preferred) and lasts about three hours. Incisions are made in the skin, the nipple / areola are moved up, the size of the areola (dark skin around the nipple ) decreased, if necessary, and the skin sutured. The incision around the areola heals well with minimal scar and a vertical incision from the areola to the breast crease fades over time. A breast implant can also be placed during a breast lift.
Following the procedure
The patient returns home the day of the procedure. The dressing is removed after two days and a support bra is worn. Patient can shower after removal of the dressing. Pain is mild and well controlled with pain medications. The swelling resolves after three to four weeks. Patients may return to work in four to seven days and return to exercise in four weeks.
