Breast Enhancement
Introduction
Breast enlargement (augmentation mammoplasty) enhances the size and the shape of the breast. This is performed with saline implants, although in certain instances silicone implants can also be used.
Indications
Breast augmentation is performed to enhance a woman's self esteem. Women who have had reduction in breast tissue following pregnancy or asymmetrical breasts are also excellent candidates. Patient expectations on the volume and shape are discussed during the consultation.
Technique
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and lasts about one and a half to two hours. The incision for placement of the implants can be either around the areola, in the inframammary fold, or in the arm pit region. The implant can be placed either above the muscle or below the muscle, which is most common. The incisions are closed and drains are not used. Surgical dressing is used for the first one to two days.
Following the procedure
The patient returns home the day of the procedure. Pain is mild to moderate and controlled with pain medications. The dressing is removed after one to two days and a support bra is worn. Return to work is possible four to seven days following the procedure, and exercise is resumed at four weeks. The swelling resolves over four to six weeks.
