Liposuction is performed to remove localized deposits of fat. Areas frequently suctioned include neck, chest, back rolls, flanks (love handles ), abdomen, outer and inner thighs, and legs. Liposcution is often combined with other procedures such as facial, breast, or body procedures. It is often marketed using terms: body contouring, body sculpting, etching, and liposculpture. Liposuction is not an alternate for weight loss or to cure obesity. It is performed for areas of fat deposit that may not respond to dieting and exercise.
The procedure can be performed either in office (small areas ) or in the hospital for larger areas or with other procedures. The areas for liposuction are marked and then injected with tumescent fluid which contains a mixture of salt water, epinephrine to decrease bleeding, and lidocaine for numbing the skin. Through small incisions (1/4 inch), liposuction is performed and continued till minimal fat is left under the skin. The incisions are sutured and a surgical compression garment is placed. Sutures are removed after 7 days. Bruising resolves in 2 to 3 weeks and swelling resolves in three to six months. It is usually minimally painful procedure with most people returning to work in 3 to 4 days and normal activity in 2 weeks. Antibiotics, pain medicine, and arnica Montanna is prescribed during the postoperative course.
